The generations

The first cross between two different strains is called f1 ("filial 1"). Its daughters crossed with each other give the f2, then the f3, and so on.

The f1 usually comes out uniform and very vigorous ("hybrid vigor"). In the f2 it gets messy: the grandparents' genes mix in a thousand ways and each plant comes out different. Those variants are called phenotypes.

Stabilizing

For a new strain to always come out the same, the breeder picks the best plants in each generation and crosses only those with each other. Generation after generation, the differences shrink. It usually takes 5 to 7 generations (years of work) to get a stable strain.

The shortcut: clones

With photoperiods, when an exceptional plant shows up, you don't need to stabilize it to keep it: you clone it. Many famous strains are "clone-only": a single plant that was passed from hand to hand as a cutting.

No plant is perfect

Every trait has its price: the highest yielders are usually less aromatic, the most potent are usually more delicate. Breeding is choosing what you want to gain and what you're willing to lose.

▲ Pros

  • With photoperiods, clones of your pick are exact copies

▼ Cons

  • Stabilizing takes several generations

🎮 Practice it in UnderGrow
